Many horticultural clubs organize open garden tours where, for a day, the public can view private gardens. This is a fun way to spend an afternoon. It's also a great way to get new garden design ideas and learn about different plants.
Remember, these gardeners are opening their gardens for free. If there is a charge it is going to a worthwhile charity. There have been horror stories about the careless tourist trampling prescious plants and yanking things out to ask what they are.
I always like to dress up a bit. For me, it makes the day a little more special. I think it also lets the garden owner know that I appreciate what they are doing. The better the experience for everyone the more gardens will be open in future.
